THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZEH.

15

Mr. Perring supposes that the faces of the blocks belonging to the casing were left rough and projecting, in order to
preserve them from being injured by the raising of the other materials for the higher parts of the building; and that they were
afterwards polished down from the top of the Pyramid by two consecutive parties of workmen. He remarks that the advantage
of the division of labour must have been well known to the antient Egyptians, from the extent to which it was evident that
system had been carried in the quarries at the Mokattam, where he found that several gangs of workmen had been successively

employed, first to clear and to level the faces of the cliffs, then to mark out the size of the blocks, afterwards to cut holes for
the insertion of wedges, then to split the stones with those instruments, and finally to remove them from the quarry; and he
conceives that these operations were carried on in different places at the same time.
Plate I. of the three Pyramids eastward of the Great Pyramid gives a Section and Plan of this Building; and in Plate II.
Fig. 2 describes the Entrance; and Fig. S, the Casing-stones.

THE NINTH PYRAMID.
THE SOUTHERN TO THE EASTWARD OF THE GREAT PYRAMID.

This Pyramid has been constructed like the rest, with stones quarried on the spot, and with a casing from the Mokattam.
The Inclined Entrance, 2 feet 6 inches above the base, and 5 feet to the eastward of the centre of the
Northern Front, is lined and roofed with masonry for 14< feet, beyond which the interior is an excavation. It consists of
an Anteroom, and of an Inner Passage leading to a Sepulchral Chamber. These have been likewise lined with masonry, which is

almost entirely destroyed. The roof is formed of slabs about 12 inches thick (see dotted lines, in plan).* The Chamber was full
of broken stones and sand, but no Sarcophagus could be found.
In Plate I. of the three Pyramids eastward of the Great Pyramid are the Section and Plan of this Building; and in Plate
II. Fig 4 is the Entrance.

PASSAGE TO SEPULCHRAL CHAMBER.

SEPULCHRAL CHAMBER.

* There is most probably, therefore, an hollow above the roof.
Note.—It is necessary to mention that Fig. 5 in Plate III. is referred to in page 3 as if it represented the lid, whereas it is an horizontal plan of the Sarcophagus; and, consequently, the holes, c c, in Fig. 5 are the same
as those, bb, in Fig. 4. The pins were placed in holes in the lid, which exactly corresponded with those in the Sarcophagus, and they dropped into them when the lid was in its place.
In consequence of the discovery made by Mr. Birch (see "Operations carried on at Gizeh," Vol. I. page 280), that the name Sensaophis is false, owing to an error in the transcription of the passage of Eratosthenes, " @t)Guu»v is
Saaitevaev ^ip<raSXpig," whereby the <rsv in sQuffttevffev is prefixed to the name Saophis; the names of the kings stated in page 8 should be Moscheriz, Saophis 2c/, Saophis 1st.
Menkahre should also be spelt Menkare.
Erratum in page 10, Plate VIII., omit "eastern and."
