ROYAL TOMBS OF THE 1st DYNASTY.

e.^

perhaps Hry pr-stn, "overseer of

the king's house.

7. Horns title Qa-a, accompanied by hb-sd,
the latter word completed by In. See vii. 6.

8. rm>?(?) "

9. Titles of Qa-a, and I J with barge carry-
ing stone, or boat with cabins ; cf. ix. 8.

10. Tablet on stepped base, inscribed
<«-(?), "Horns behind... (?)," the last

sign very doubtful (cf. xlvi. 121 with "W48M-);

below it" _ =£= , evidently the word sc, " cut."

Better examples of the other inscriptions are
in the following plates :—

PI. ix. 1. Several groups, viz., a. contain-
ing °vm° K35- 'uP, recurring with the signs more
or less abbreviated in 2, 4, and viii. 12, " Resi-
dence of all Protection behind."

b. nrzj \ rfjh " chief (?) in the king's house,"
or " garden-keeper of the king's house."

c. ^fe=s ivr, "great," possibly belonging to the
last title.

—a-^ rnp't htp, " year of peace," or perhaps

d.

" vegetables and offerings."

In 2 these titles are associated with the Horus
title Qa-a.

On another part of the same vessel is a further
inscription, which evidently was identical with 3,
showing dual-kingdom and Nebty titles of Qa-a,

and

containing

D, perhaps meaning
" The Residence of him who alone is Horus
(Hrw yw wc)," followed by the title b. as above,
cf. xxvi. 58.

In 2 "S^ is followed by °»>, making
"great one of the priestly orders (?)," and in
4 and 5 there is ^=? , " great one of the

four priestly orders," preceded by /C Neith(?).

8. Cf. viii. 9.

12. "The sem-priest of the Residence of
Qa-a," sm lyt Nb'ty QJ-r, a fragment of the
same in viii. 5.

PI. x. 1—7. Cursive writing in ink : 1 perhaps
shows the royal name ^^; 3—5 may give
various spellings of Hms or Hms't, " Crocodile,"

as a proper name, later Msh. Cf. Sethe, Verbum,
i., p. L51_; Dendereh, Bob, PI. xxxvii.n., 1. 592,
■A. In 4 it seems to be jj

Here the name is spelt by the word-sign
Jims as well as the full alphabetic spelling, and
probably the determinative 3 ; cf. 5. The
form of the bolt —h— is interesting.

34. The rest of the inscriptions in this
plate and in Pis. xi., xii. will be best treated in
the order of the clear hand-copies following.

PL xiii. 2 == x. 9. Horus name Zet between
<§> and V y T ■ The last group consists of
signs difficult to recognize; but the second seems
only a variant of (? shm, and the last may be
the amulet or the Meskhent symbol mentioned
in Hieroglyphs, p. 00 ; Ptahhetep T., fig. 22.

3 = xi. 1. Horus name Zet, with other signs.

5 = x. 10.

The ebony and ivory tablets of ^^ on
pis. xiv.—xvi. are very remarkable. The most
complete example is No. 1G, on pi. xv. They
seem to have been rectangular, and generally
engraved on one side only. In the most
important instances the design was divided
vertically into two halves ; that on the right
comprised scenes and inscriptions in several
registers, bounded on the outer edge by the sign
I " year" or "flourish." The other half consists
of an inscription with the signs irregularly
arranged, including titles of the king and of his
officers. If { means year, it may suggest that

these tablets were brief annals of a reign, the
year being marked by the chief events and the
names of the chief officials.

Right half.—In No. 12 this is narrow. The
J is clear in 16 and in 25. The top register in
16 shows the king seated under a canopy with
stepped base, and again running forward or
dancing, holding the ^ and perhaps the paddle
I. As in later times the symbol (g accompanies
this scene [Hieroglyphs, p. 64, fig. 36). It
represents a ceremony in the worship of the
gods, but it does not here appear in Avhose
honour the ceremony was performed. In 25
