PREFACE.

IN submitting to the public the accompanying sketches, the author is aware that he
exposes them to a formidable comparison with the very beautiful and masterly productions

of Mr. Roberts.

As this volume, however, is not published in the same expensive form, it is presumed
that a large portion of the public interested in the monumental remains of Egypt may feel
inclined to possess representations of them for a comparatively small sum ; and it is hoped
that the care and attention the author has taken, to represent faithfully the appearances
of these celebrated buildings as they actually present themselves to the traveller, may
render the work worthy of support.

It will be observed, that the subjects chosen are some of the most celebrated of the
ancient buildings ; and should the author meet with any degree of encouragement, he
contemplates publishing a second series, though the present volume forms a complete work
by itself.

The letter-press is merely descriptive of the sketches, and does not profess to contain
any very original matter ; it is chiefly compiled from the best authorities, with extracts
from the author's journal, written during his voyage on the Nile.
