THE TEMPLE BY MOONLIGHT 245

their doors, conversing and smoking; the small
glimmering lights within produced a charming effect.
Near the temple a very picturesque scene awaited

attentive. On reaching the temple we rested for
some time in its beautiful portico, wandered through
the halls and courts, now silent except for the echo

of the temple. The moonlight appeared to render
it, if possible, even more beautiful than it had been
by daylight! The Temple of Edfou remains very
deeply and clearly impressed upon our memories.
