PREFACE.
jPhe three Eflays which I here ofFer to the
public, though detached from each other, and
from the Eflay on the Pidhirefque, are, in
refpedl to the matter they contain, and the fuite
of ideas they prefent, perfecUy connebfed, In
all that I have written, I have had two chief
purpofes in view: the one, to point out the befl:
method of forming our tafte and judgment in
regard to the effebf of all viflble objehfs, univer^-
fally; the other, to fliew that the fame method,
and the fame principles, may be applied to the
improvement of thofe particular objebts, with
which each man is individually concerned.
The firft ftep towards acquiring an exacl
tafte and judgment in refpebf to vifible objebfs,
is to gain an accurate knowledge of their lead-
ing charadters; I, therefore, in my firft Eflay,
a 3 traced
