have attempted in the firft of thefe three Eflays;
and the detail, which, from the novelty of the
plan, I have been obliged to enter into, muft
be my excufe for its leiigth. I muft, however,
obferve, that the fubjedf is much more com-
prehenflve than the title announces: the dif-
cuflion is not confined to the banks of made-
water, nor even to thofe of natural rivers and
lakes, but is extended to all the natural beau-
ties and varieties of objedts near the eye; which
therefore are clafled by painters under the title
offore-ground. All, who are in any degree con-
verfant with the art of painting, know of what
confequence fore-grounds are in pidtures; how
interefting they are in themfelves, and what
influence they have on the effedl of the whole.
If they are of fuch confequence to the painter,
they are of ftill greater importance to the im-
prover: the painter can command the other
parts of his pidhire, equally with the fore-
ground;
