The noble fleet of clipper ships which graced the high seas in the
last century, and reached their hey-dey in its later middle years, had
long awaited a worthy limner of their beautiful lines and lofty apparel
of sail. Mr. Jack Spurling, artist and seaman, has done full justice
to their charm. In the past three years Mr. Spurling has executed
for “ The Blue Peter ” paintings of some of the more renowned of
the clippers, which paintings have been from month to month printed
in colour in the magazine. From amongst these, six have, as a first
instalment, been selected for facsimile reproduction—the Boston built
ships, Dreadnought, Lightning and James Baines ; the two famous
China tea-clippers, Cutty Sark and Thermopyla and the Carlisle Castle,
one of the Melbourne wool-clippers.
