1G9 Dreadful Mortality.—The Chartist Petition presented on
April 10th to the House of Commons, was signed by 3,600,000
persons.

18] The City Tolls.—The offensive personage herein referred
to was removed after this notice of the annoyance.

181 The Art of Fighting a Duel refers to a personal dis-
pute between Mr. Cnirrs and Mi;. Feargus O'Connor.

182 How to treat a Foreign Propagandist.—Some foreign
agitators were detected endeavouring to excite a disturbance
in London.

192 Cochrane's Monster Meeting.—Number two proved an
utter failure.

195 The Battle of Limerick.—See ante, p. 109.

215 " Lola Montes " was at this [period a resident at the
Court of the King of Bavaria.

228 Fantastic Exhibitions.—The feat here referred to was
accomplished by M. Houdin, enclosing a boy in a suit of
armour which locked at tke joints and enclosed the performer
like a lobster in its shell. Until the secret of the machinery
became known, great interest was caused by the exhibition.

231 Sanitary Measures.—The Health of Towns Bill was

strongly opposed by City Influence.
234 Literary Intelligence.—There is now a book-stall at

almost every tirst-e.lass Railway Station in the Kingdom !

The Jewish Race.—The Jewish Disabilities Bill was 234
thrown out by the Lords on the motion of Lord Ellen-
borough by a majority of 35.

Auricular Phenomenon.—Sir Henry Bulwer, our 235
Ambassador at Madrid, had received his passports, and a
peremptory notice to quit Spain in 48 hours from the Due de
Sotomayou, the Spanish Prime Minister, in consequence of an
indiscreet communication of a despatch from Lord Palmer-
ston. The difference between the two Courts was soon accom-
modated.

The Sluggard.—Loud John Russell's Ministry were 241
thought to be making little progress in 1848.

Drury Lane (Spectral) Fund was established by David 245
Garrick, and has grown into an institution of great wealth.
Owing to the closing of Drury Lane Theatre to English per-
formances in 1848, no new members could be admitted to the
benefits of the Fund, and hence this " Spectral Dinner."

The Sleeping Beauty.—Losd John Russell (C.) Mor- 251
peth (R.) Gkey, Moli;swortii, Palmerston, Cobden,
Hoishouse, Disraeli, Wellington, (C.) Brougham, Sib-
thorpe, Bentinck, Sir R. Inglis, Hume, O'Connell (L.).

A Dishonoured Bill.—When a French Company appeared 260
at Drury Lane, they were very improperly denied a hearing,
in retaliation fur some indignity shown in Paris to Mi;.
Macready the great English actor.
