5 Naughty Jonathan.—The American press at this time
contained some strangely contradictory articles. Whilst one
writer blamed England for not assisting the North to crush
the South, another repudiated all aid from the Mother
Country, and declared any interference on the part of
England would be an insult to the United States.
19 A Hint to Dr. Gray refers to a controversy carried on
with much acrimony as to the truth or falsehold of M. Du
Chaillu’s statements concerning the Gorillas.
21 The Dogberry of Debate.—Wincent Scully, the M.P.
for Sligo.
23 “ Now don’t be a Cross Old ‘ Punch’.”—It was in
agitation to encroach on the beautiful gardens of Kensington
Palace by making a ride through them.
37 Retiring into Private Life.—When Lord John Rus-
sell accepted an Earldom it was feared that his public use-
fulness would end.
45 A Hint to Victor-Emmanuel.—Yictor-Emmanuel was
born in Savoy, which he had recently ceded to France, and it
was now rumoured that Sardinia was to follow.
47 Above that Sort of Thing refers to the rumour men-
tioned in the preceding note.
57 A Lord Mare’s Nest.—The elevation of Lord John
Russell to an Earldom left his seat for the City vacant, and
Mr. Western Wood (a Liberal) defeated Mr. William
Cubitt, the Lord Mayor (a Conservative) by 506.
75 A Card for Pam.—Lord S-. (Lord Shaftesbury),
who was said to influence the nomination of the Bishops.
87 “Doth not a Meeting like this Make Amends P”—
Her Majesty the Queen visited Ireland, Aug. 21, 1861.
89 A Sop to Cerberus.—Mr. Roebuck defended the Em-
peror of Austria in his polioy towards Italy and Hungary.

long since extinct. Baron de Yidil was tried for an attempt
to murder his own son whilst out riding near Twickenham.
The son refused to give evidence, and the jury found the
prisoner guilty of unlawfully wounding only, and he was
sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Notice to Quit.—The Pope had given refuge to Ferdi- 107
nand, ex-King of Naples, to the displeasure of the Emperor
of the French.
Hard upon Lord Malmesbury.—It has been a standing 135
reproach to the Foreign Office, that many of the employes
were unacquainted with Lindley Murray.
Thames and his Tributary refers to the dilatory action 147
of the Metropolitan Board of Works in proceeding with the
cleansing of the Thames.
The Fall of the Leaf.—There was great complaint of 153
the scarcity of raw material for making paper, and the exclu-
sion (by high tariff) of foreign rags, was a grievance with the
paper-makers.
