DESCRIPTION OF THE PLATES.

projections in the wooden core, the nature of which is
not clear.

In the right leg the seam goes down the back of
the thigh, a little inside the median line, and con-
tinues down the calf. There are five nails round the
top of the thigh, a group of three on the right side of
the leg above the kneecap, and three more just below
it. There are two small holes in the front of the
thigh. Down the calf is a single row of nails, i cm.
apart. There is an extra nail in the middle of the
calf, 2 cm. to the left of the line of nails. The left
half of the plate overlaps the right.

There is no base to the foot ; the plate runs on
slightly below the sole, and this lowest part is studded
with nails 3 cm. apart. The metal is pierced between
the toes ; the divisions were beaten through from
above. The toes, on the other hand, seem to have
been beaten out from the inside. There are traces of
gilding on the toenails.

In the smaller statue the construction of the head
cannot be so well seen, but in the photograph it will
be noticed that the head-piece overlaps that of which
the face is made, and that the line of junction is that
of the hair. The ears were not found ; they were
evidently made separately and attached. On the
forehead is a hole for the attachment of a uraeus.

The jointing on the shoulder, and the nails in the
base of the trunk and the top of the thigh, can also
be seen in the photograph.

As in the larger statue the joints run down each
side of the trunk and down the back of the legs. In
the right leg there is a double row of nails, one larger
than the other. The larger, which project 5 to 7 m.m.,
run about 1 cm. to the left of the smaller, which are
but 2-4 m.m. long.

The most striking point is the difference in the
size of the legs ; this arises from the convention of
Egyptian art, which required the body to be erect,
one leg to be advanced, and yet the foot to be planted
flat on the floor. This could only be arranged by
lengthening the advanced leg.

bell, and the following by F. W. Green, down to
PL. LXXIL]

PL. LVII. Archaic limestone statue from the
northern gateway of the town wall. Ashmolean
Museum, Oxford.

Pl. LVII I. Fragments of two steles of the
archaic period. The larger fragment was found in
one of the storerooms in the S.E. side of the temple.
The material is a dense quartzose rock of a dark
slate-green colour, similar to that of some of the
royal steles of the archaic period, found at Abydos.
The design consists of two parts. On the upper is
seen a figure, probably King Kha-sekhem, kneeling
on a prostrate foe who is depicted with an aquiline
