The formula and tlie séquence, it will be observed, are identical throughout the séries. Each
inscription begins in the second column, is continued in the first, and ends with the third. The
naines of the genii of Karneter are; with one exception, written from left to right; the exception
being Amset, which probably by an error of the ancient engraver, reads from right to left.
The Pinotem of thèse yases, who assumes no royal cartouche and claims no other title
than that of High Priest of Amen, is evidently Pinotem I, son of Piankhi and grandson of
Her-hor. The mummy of tliis Pontiff, enclosed in two mummy-cases, was found in the vault
at Dayr-el~Baharee, and is classed as No. XXIII in Professor Maspero's Memoir contri-
buted to the Fifth Orientalist Congress, Berlin, 1881. In Professor Maspero's Officiai Report,
he is thus classed under « Cercueils du Second Groupe ». — « 3° Cercueil du Grand prêtre,
d'Ammon, général en chef, Pinotem. La caisse extérieure porte le long des jambes clouée, une
bande de cuivre sur laquelle a été estampée l'inscription.» P. 16. La Trouvaille de Deïr-el-
Bahari. 1881. Eegarding the very curious and interesting inscription stamped upon the above-
mentioned leather band, see Dr. A. Wiedemann's interesting contribution « Zur XXI. Dynastie
Manetho's» in the Zeitsclirift fur Aegyptische Sprache. Heft II. 1882. This Pinotem is the same
personage whose fimereal papyrus was bought at Luxor in 1876 by Colonel Campbell.
The above vases are the property of G. Briscoe Eyre Esq. of Warens, Lyndhurst. Three
are open, and their contents abstracted. The fourth (Amset) is yet closed, and doubtless
contains part of the viscera of Pinotem I.
2. The Canopic Vases of Princess Nesi-Khonsu. Thèse vases stand 15 inches high,
including the covers, which measure 4 inches in height and represent the heads of Amset,
Hapi, Tuatmutf and Kebhsenf. The vases are of fine alabaster; the covers of sycamore wood,
admirably carved and painted in délicate tempera, The pigments principally used in the
colouring of the covers appear to have been red and yellow ochre, terra-verte, and white.
Ail the colours are largely mixed with white. The face of Amset is laid in with red ochre;
the Klaft, or headgear, being terra-verte relieved by stripes of pale yellow, apparently of the
pigment known as «orpiment». Each vase is inscribed with a hieroglyphed legend in four
vertical columns 2V4 inches in length. The characters are small, very earefully eut, and filled
in with pale blue produced by a mixture of cobalt and white. — They read as follows : —
