BAS-RELIEF AVEC INSCRIPTION DE SENNACHÉRIB

is engraved, M. Wilbour found a stone, with a Greek inscription, built into the wall
of a ruîhed Coptic monastery which subsequently became a Mohammedan mosque.
Tbe stone is in an inverted position, and was covered with plaster. Tins I removed, and
so brougbt to light tbe following text :

&M23ftWW%*> o$ oa »<.rp q> » a

TWN eNi^Y*rûk5^fVCo|Hf^oc-"rt:*n)ôcN/ypr|^Ai<.S

Tins I venture to transcribe and to translate as follows : (1) [Erased] [à]vSo$o[?]

« Famous is Akolouthos sbekb (?) of Phila:, and God (our) protector, who hast, along
» with tliis fortress, rescued the bouses of tbose in it> when we were twice banded
» over (?) to wickedness, Akolouthos being prefect of tbe Camp at PhÙse. » It will be
seen tbat the inscription belongs to tbe Byzantine period ; but we learn from it tbat
there was a Castrum at Pbilœ.

M. Wilbour and myself bave again been examining tbe Famine-Stele at Sehêl.
He adberes to bis opinion that the first character in tbe royal cartouche is Klier or Ah,
and it is quite certain tbat the last character <—> is to be distinguished from <=z=> which
is always angular in the inscription. In fact in the last line but one, <—> is used and
interchanges with ««m. M. Wilbour and I bave always believed that the second cha-
racter is thes, and I would tberefore now identify the king with the Aktisanes of Dio-
dors (I, 60) and regard him as one of the Etbiopians who got possession of Egypt in
the time of Ptolemy Epiphanes. His eighteenth year refers of course to bis reign in
Ethiopia.

Chacun d'eux
