THE INSTALLATION OF A VIZIER

by

Alan H. Gardiner

The subject of the présent study is an inscription discovered by Mr Newberry in
the tomb of Rekhmere, and published for the fîrst time by him in his memoir on that
tomb1. A correct outline of the sensé was given in the same volume, but no trans-
lation lias y et appeared in print. The inscription is professedly the record of the
speech which Thutmosis III made on the occasion of Rekhmere's installation as Vizier.
As such, it is the counterpart of the well-known text from the saine tomb recording
the spécifie duties of the Vizier.

In my attempt to restore the defective text I bave-been greatly helped by variants
from two other tombs of Viziers, discovered and generously placed at my disposai by
Mr Newberry. It is much to be hoped that ]\lr Newberry will find leisure to publish
in facsimile so much of thèse variant texts as still remains.

The tombs from which the variants are derived are (1) the tomb of Woser ~j ^

<ss>$, the immédiate predecessor of Rekhmere as Vizier; (2) the tomb of Hepu

the Vizier of Thebes under Thutmosis IV. Both tombs are in the hill of Sheikh

Abd-el-Gurnah.

Text and Commentavy

The lines 1-4 on pl. IX of the publication retain thèse numbers here. The re-
mainder of the inscription, on pl. X, bas been numbered from 1. 5 to 1. 24.

The variants from the tomb of Hepu are designated by the letter H ; those from
the tomb of Woser, by the letter W. The whole of the material placed at my dis-
