(they) shall be heard in going to meet thereofW.n In modernized form this reads : «Let
thëre be brought to my (our?) knowledge ail that bas been commandée! or said about
the matter, so that it may not be necessary for me (us?) to corne to the Résidence.
But if nothing shall have been said about it, then let the Vizier send his messengers
to fetch them (thèse people) quickly. And when they arrive, let them be tried with
ail expédition.^ The allusion seems to be to some persons who were «[hiding?^ them-
selves in their villages, and not coming to perform their tasksn (11. 3-/i). Note the ab-
normal writing J for J ; this points to a spécial idiom.
(/i) Weslcar n, 23. After Reddedet, the mother of the three future kings, had
purified herself, she began to busy herself about lier household, perhaps in view of
a contemplated thanksgiving festival. Hearing from lier maid-servant that the only
thing lacking in the equipment of the house was hnw, by vvhich, as the sequel shows,
measures of corn are meant, Reddedet asks : et Why have not (the requisite) measures
been brought?t. To this the answer is : J^; ■ p™ *. \*Z\ m

On this view there is an antithesis belween «lierez and m H crin a chambern; and
smnh is an infinitive, meaning «(means of) making goodn et improving» the situation.
Reddedet has no scruple in borrowing the dancing-women's corn, or rather, she
would have borrowed it but for the mysterious music which is heard by the maid-
servant when she goes to fetch it, and which causes Reddedet to change her mind.
Erman gave up the sentence beginning with nfr pw as insoluble, and so far as I am
aware, no likely suggestion with regard to it has hitherto been made<3l

times with a reflexive pronoun «lo push oneself forward». In the présent case it is not évident whetlier

considération», or that of speed, in which case we shall understand rtwith ail expédition». For the word
