(d) Beaded leather:
One case in the Nubian Cemetery presented a leather skirt elaborately decorated with
small ring-beads sewed in a lozenge pattern, and with other beads the arrangement of which
was not clear. Comparing other lots found in the Egyptian Cemetery with this Nubian
example, it becomes probable that some of the beads found in the Egyptian graves had
also been attached to leather skirts.
1. K 5611: A:
Three lots, (a), (6), and (c). The lot (a) was around waist at upper part of leather skirt;
the lot (5) was lower down near bottom of skirt; the lot (c) was sewed on skirt
near top, at sides, and in front:
Lot (a):
38 ball-beads, green faience; diam., 4 mm.
18 ball-beads, amethyst; diam., ca. 5 mm.
27 ball-beads, carnelian; diam., 4-6 mm.
10 cowries, base gold; length, 15-18 mm.
Lot (6):
Down front, a lozenge of black faience and white shell ring-beads sewed to skirt.
Down each side, a lozenge of blue faience and white shell beads, sewed to skirt.
Lot (c):
16 barrel-beads, carnelian; length, 5-7 mm.
174 barrel-beads, carnelian; length, 2.5 mm. to 3 mm.
8 ball-beads, carnelian; diam., 3-4.5 mm.
As the burial was undisturbed, these numbers may be taken as complete.
2. K 332:4: K 332: 5, 6: K332:iii: K 332:i: K332:ii: K 332:iv:
These beads were found over, under, and about body A, the chief body; I reconstruct as
follows:
(а) Leather skirt with a bead girdle attached to waistband:
950± disc-beads (diam., 7± mm.), blue faience.
(б) A pattern of ball-beads sewed on same leather skirt or on a cloth tunic which hid
the skirt; in the latter case, the two breast-covers belong here.
1050 =>= ball-beads (diam., 5-8 mm.), blue faience.
2 breast-covers (diam., 7 cm.), blue faience.
(c) Necklaces:
241 carnelian ball-beads (diam., 5-9 mm.).
27 blue-glazed quartzite ball-beads (diam., 10-11 mm.).
13 corrugated ball-beads (diam., 35-40 mm.).
2 discoid pendants with tang for suspension (46 X 26 X 10 mm.), of base gold;
other gold ornaments probably removed by thieves.
3. KXB-61:
Mixed with fragments of leather skirt at waist and hips of body F:
63 ball-beads, blue faience; diam., 10 mm.
38 long cylindrical beads, blue faience.
14 barrel-beads, blue faience.
4 amulet-beads, blue faience.
50 ring-beads, blue faience.
1 glazed crystal, length, 48 mm.
