single register with fish or birds or flowers, and with more or less elaborate bands or borders
above and below. It is worthy of notice that the bowls with fish and those with flowers
have the chief design on the inside, while the bowls with birds have it on the outside. This
difference corresponds to a difference in form and ware which indicates that the bird-bowls
were not made by the same craftsman as the fish-bowls. Similarly, the jars appear to have
been the work of at least two different men, or two different shops, and while I am unable
to distinguish in general the work of individual craftsmen or shops, it must be remembered
that the division into types and varieties is founded on factors which in many cases repre-
sent differences in the producing hands.
In the following list, examples marked with a star (*) have the pattern incised in the dark
background and filled with blue-glazed white paste; those marked with a cross (f) have the
pattern incised in the blue background and filled with black paste.

which lacks any border.

two lines. Outside: on lip, three heavy black lines; below, a row of solid black right-
angled triangles; rest lost. Incised blue background faience.

Type 1-2. With bird and fiish designs inside
13. K I, debris on the west (Su 494). Largest specimen; diam., ca. 26 cm. Inside: center
lost; two lines with small wavy line between; a register of fish, swimming to left, and
buds; a register of birds, flying to left, and buds and flowers; above, an outline block-
border and a black rim-band. Outside: flower calyx; block-border in outline; three
rows of shaded triangles, erect, separated by double lines; black rim-band (Fig. 182, 1).
