(f) Type VI. Rilled cups:
A large number of fragments were found which were marked on the outside by narrow
parallel rills incised in the faience before baking and filled with black, manifestly in imita-
tion of basket-work. All were small, and at least four varieties of form were distinguishable.
The small egg-shaped form (Type VI-1) was not decorated inside, but many of the other
forms had black line designs after the manner of Type I. Some examples had small holes
through the rim, perhaps for fastening lids or covers.

water, indicated by vertical wavy lines; above that, to be restored like 1-4, 18, or
with a band of fish. Outside: alternate ridges, marked with short vertical lines.
60. K XX, No. iv; Photo. B 2637, 1/2. Inside: center missing; row of four (?) fish swimming
to left, twigs above; above this, a black zigzag line separating shaded triangles, al-
ternately pendent and erect; finally, an outline block-border. Outside: four parallel
rows of black dots arranged in a zigzag; rim, black (Fig. 182, 14).
Type VI-3. Deeper rilled cups, basket-form, Fig. 182, no. 15

shaded pendent triangles; a row of gazelles running to right; a line. Outside: each
ridge marked with groups of ten black marks, separated by spaces of the same length
as the group, so that the groups of one ridge fall above the spaces of the ridge below,
and vice versa.

visible; two lines; flying bird and twigs; two lines. Outside: like VI-2, 59.

side: widely spaced strokes, so placed as to form oblique lines (like basket-work).
