(2) Ceremonial spear
Only one spear was found at Kerma, and that was a small ceremonial weapon buried
with a young girl, the chief body in a Nubian burial. The butt was as long as the blade,
was hollow, and still contained the end of the wooden shaft. The butt was continued as a
heavy mid-rib with diminishing oval section to the broad tip. The blade consisted of this
tapering mid-rib flanked on each side by a narrow edge. The mid-rib was decorated with
incised cross-hatched lines and the whole blade was gilded. The butt had a slit on one side.
The spear was wrought, not cast, and finished with a pointed implement.

burial, a young girl. Photo. B 2641, No. 8.
