It is to be noted that the number of examples found in K III is composed of eleven
bowls of the curious type Blk. W. XIII, and one each of the types XIX-2 and XXIII-1.
The bowls with the excrescence on the bottom (XIII) form a distinct type with a curious
distribution — eleven in K III, seven in K XXXIIIA, and one each in K XVI and K XIX.
But the other two are wide pots related to the series of Bkt. and R. P. vessels, and may be
considered as types of those vessels finished in a different manner (cf. Bkt. XXII, 5, R. P.
XXI, and Bkt. XVII).
15. BLACK-MOUTHED WARE
With the exception of Blk. W. XIII, the brown surfaced black wares appeared to be
cheap ceremonial vessels made for the burial. This was certainly so in the case of the very
similar black-mouthed wares. The material of the B. M. was poor Bkt. material with a
thin red wash, and carelessly polished. Except for the wash and the polish, the ware was
about the same as that of the Blk. W., and indeed some of the Blk. W. examples actually
had blackened mouths. This points to a similarity of treatment in the burning, as well as
to a similarity of ware.
