There came the overseer of the private apartment (or prison ?), Netef-
emib, and wrote the [command] concerning which he came:
Let rations (?) be given to these Mazay who arrived yesterday.
This his message was carried out for him (?).

Rations on this day according to command:
Various kinds of bread
Beer
Date-wine

100 loaves (from) store.

On another papyrus, the name of the chief of the Mazay appears to be

The history of the Egyptian occupation of Ethiopia during Dynasty XII may be set
forth as follows:

The object of all operations was to secure the advantages of the southern trade and to make the
roads safe for the traffic.
Amenemhat I. Ca. 2000-1970 b.c. Co-reign with his son, 1980-1970 b.c.
Ca. 1971 b.c. Expedition to overthrow Wawat.
Undated. Continued occupation of the Trading Station under K I at Kerma.
Perhaps the founding of Inebuw-Amenemhat.
Sesostris I. Ca. 1980-1935 b.c. With his father, 1980-1970 b.c.; with his son, 1938—
1935 b.c.
Ca. 1962 b.c. Expedition of the general Menthuhotep, probably that ac-
companied by the king and referred to by Ameny of Beni Hasan,
possibly that mentioned by Sarenpuwt of Elephantine. Probably
the one serious campaign of Dynasty XII.
Ca. 1963 b.c. Sarenpuwt of Assuan appointed “great controller of Ethi-
opia” (i. e. governor).
Undated. Hepzefa of Assiut appointed governor, probably as successor of
Sarenpuwt, and sent to Inebuw-Amenemhat with a large household.
Construction of K I, the fortified administrative center.
Undated. Construction of the forts at Buhen and Semna West. Ikkur,
Iken, and the South Fort at Semna West probably already in exist-
ence, and restored.
