from the west. They fall into two groups: (1) rows 1-5, (2) rows 6-11. In the western group rows 2
and 4 are of larger tombs. In row 1, tombs b and c are so close together that the superstructures were
probably in direct contact; similarly in row 2 all three graves a, b, and c. In row 4 the substructures of
a and b are in contact. In the last case the mastabas must have been in contact or part of the same
structure (twin-mastaba). In other cases it is possible that each row had one superstructure (or three
superstructures built one against the other), but many of the tombs may have had separate super-
structures (cf. complexes N 585, &c., in Naga-ed-Der, III). See Map i.
