86 GRAVES SUBSIDIARY TO THE ROYAL TOMBS OF DYNASTY I AT ABYDOS
Zet e: on the west; a single N-S row of large graves, running north from near the NW corner of the
substructure to opposite group d; no similar group in the Zer cemetery. Thickness of lining
walls, o-6 on north and south, 0-5 on west and east. Thickness of cross walls, 0-2 to 0-5 m. The
group appears to have been begun with No. 2 to which No. 1 was an adjunct, and built north-
wards in the trench. The graves are numbered from south to north, and follow here in order
of size:

square E-W. The row began, I judge, with No. 2 parallel to the west face of the main tomb

Total: 21 graves; the 3 largest
are N-S, 6
are nearly square N-S, 9 are
square, and 3 are nearly

and except the two smallest graves followed the orientation of W 2. I count the whole 21 as
N-S graves parallel to west face of main tomb, but of course admit the difficulty.
Zet f: on east, north of g; corresponding in situation to Zer h; a solid N-S rectangle of 3 N-S rows
of 19 E-W graves each. A slight bend in the east and west lining walls gives the northern
10 graves of each row a slight angle to the southern 9 which in turn make a slight angle with
group g. The trench was lined on north and then southwards until it joined g with one abnormal
grave touching the north end of g. The thickness of lining on north part (Nos. 1-10), o-6;
southern part (Nos. 11-19) on west, 0-55, and on east, 0-5 m. Thickness of long dividing walls,
about o-22 m. E(ast), M(iddle), and W(est) rows numbered from north to south.

Total: 57 graves; all reckoned as E-W graves although the proportions are small and 9 graves
(11-19) in M row are nearly square. The difficulty is to determine whether these graves are
parallel to the main tomb, but as they lie east of the whole cemetery I reckon them as parallel.
Zet g: east of main tomb, in the situation of Zer g; a single N-S row; 10 graves (1-10 numbered from
south), with 2 graves (11-12) added on north of row, and 1 grave (No. 13) west of No. 1. The
south and east lining walls built first, uniform from 1 to 12 with thickness of 0-45 m. on east
