to the sky, descends from the east; the passage enters the rock and continues in a gentle slope 38-5 m.
long to a square shaft which descends from the surface (19 m. deep); there the passage turns at right
angles towards the centre of the pyramid, sloping down (25 m.) to a second flight of steps, 9-5 m. long (angle
of 450); then the passage runs horizontally for 13 m.and enters a chamber under the centre of the pyramid.



This chamber is 3-63 m. (N-S) by 2-65 m., and 3 m. high. The floor of the chamber is 24 m. below
the base of the pyramid. There are two other galleries cut in the rock and opening into the shaft,
one of these running north and entering a long E-W gallery with thirty-two compartments (six on the
east, six on the west, and twenty on the north). Barsanti, who originally excavated this tomb, was of the
opinion that it had never been used for a burial. In agreement with that, we found no trace of any chapel
on the east face, but if the chapel had been of c.b. it might have completely disappeared. If the
pyramid was unused the burial-apartments are probably incomplete and the plan may have contemplated
