138 TOMB TYPES OF DYNASTY II
plan of the underground apartments and their floor areas follow the range in size of the mastabas.
The general plan presents a stairway (usually from the north), a portcullis, a wide corridor with side
magazines, a hall with a burial-chamber on the west. In the finest tombs there are other chambers
east of the hall which Quibell identified as rooms for water-jars, latrine, &c., and other rooms south of
the hall which he calls sleeping-apartments. But in the smaller tombs the general plan is reduced to
a simpler scale. These twelve mastabas with rock-cut underground burial-chambers I place with
Quibell in Dyn. II but covering the whole range of the dynasty and perhaps extending into Dyn. III.
These twelve mastabas are as follows:
DESCRIPTION OF SAQQARAH MASTABAS OF TYPE IV A (i) OF DYNASTY II
2-ci. QS 2302: see Quibell, Archaic Mastabas, pl. XXX, p. 30. Tomb of Ruaben; dated by clay sealings
to the reign of Netery-muw, 3rd king of the dynasty, see Fig. 58.
Superstructure: a filled c.b. mastaba with an additional c.b. casing; both the inner and the outer c.b.
casings have two offering niches on the valley side (east), the southern of which is larger and of
the ‘great-door’ type. The chapel is obscure, but was probably of the open-air type.
