3. GRAVE AT DEIR-EL-BALLAS
B. 39 (see Fig. 40). Oval pit with side chamber to the east, 140 X 75 cm. and 60 cm. deep; depth to bottom of chamber
100 cm.; chamber 140 X 110 cm.; corners rounded off; axis runs 180 E of N.
Burial: badly plundered; only lower part of skeleton remained; body on left side; head south, face west;
contracted.
Objects:
Two pots of coarse brown ware standing in SE and SW corner of chamber.

4. GRAVES AT ZAWIYET-EL-ARYAN

Z 113 (see Fig. 189). Rectangular pit, 210X 85 cm. and 88 cm. deep; fragments of wooden lining on E and W; half of
wooden beam cut longitudinally, across northern half of grave.

Burial: body disturbed, head north.
Objects:
Under Nos. 1-6 a basket made of pounded reeds; bound with
cord, 12X36 cm. with thick reed frame.
1. Basalt cup.
2. Alabaster jar with handles (in three pieces).
3. Large shoulder jar with pointed bottom; red ware.
4. Cylinder jar.
5. Cylinder jar.
6. Fragment of copper.
7. Fragment of jar.
8. End of jar.
9. Base of flat-bottomed pot.
10. Carnelian beads.

12. Amulet, head of leopard.

Z 116 (see Fig. 29). Rectangular pit, 204X114 cm. and 215 cm. deep; wood roofed; central long beam 15 cm. in
diameter upon which are laid cross beams 15 cm. in diameter and roofing boards 2-5 cm. thick; wooden coffin,
120x63 cm., covered with framework like Z 124 (bier?) with slots for lacing in mats or skin; sides of coffin
i-6 cm. thick; floor boards 1-7 cm. thick; floor boards run under sides of coffin (?).
Burial: female; on left side, contracted, head south, face west; on right arm three bracelets (Nos. 15-17);
around neck, carnelian necklace; below bottom of coffin and immediately under stomach of woman were
bones of a very small child (new born).
Objects:
1. Large jar; red-brown ware, wet smoothed, speckled with iron.
2-3. Similar smaller jars.
4. Black basalt cylinder jar with rope decoration.
5. Bowl; red polished.
6-7. Plates; red-brown ware; red wash; polished inside only.
8. Cylinder jar; flat base; pink ware; wet smoothed; mud stopper; filled with grey ash and vegetable fibre.
9. Cylinder jar; base slightly convex; same size as No. 8; pink ware; mud stopper; filled with grey ash.
10. Cylinder jar; base slightly convex; red ware; mud stopper; filled with grey ash.
11. Jar; coarse red ware; wet smoothed; white surface; contained black ash and the three ivory pins Nos.
