with firearms. Shooting crossbows was also a form of physical exercise and mass en-
tertainment. As a hunting weapon, it was used until the late eighteenth or early nine-
teenth century.
The second part provides timelined Information on seven crossbows that have sur-
vived in the Czartoryskis’ collection. The most precious are doubtless two objects:
a bullet crossbow (stone-bow) for hunting wildfowl, associated, in the Puławy tradi-
tion, with Isabella Clara Eugenia, daughter of Philip II king of Spain and wife of Arch-
duke Albert of Austria, and an early seventeenth-century heavy hunting crossbow
from Saxony, produced by Johann Gottfried Hanisch, a renowned crossbow-maker
and a shooting master to the Dresden court. Eąually interesting is a German windlass
- a craneąuin to puli the bow. Describing the surviving bolts, Izabela Czartoryska in-
flated their historical status. Obviously, not all her comments were true to the histori-
cal reality, neither can all of them be confirmed yet that does not detract from them
their historical significance.
