Summary
Stained Glass Panels from the Former Zamoyski Collection in Adam-
pol. In the Circle of Lower Saxon Art around 1200
In 2016, on the initiative of the Polish committee of Corpus Vitrearum, two medieval
stained glass panels depicting the Martyrdom and Funeral of Saint Stephen, which had
decorated windows of the chapel in the Zamoyski palace in Adampol until the 1970s,
underwent conservation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. After conservation
their private owner deposited the stained glass windows at the National Museum in
Krakow.
The conservation treatment provided an opportunity to carry out joint interdis-
ciplinary research on the stained glass, which involved both classic methods used in
art history and methods making use of physico-chemical analyses (at the Faculty of
Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow
analyses were conducted with the use of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, macro XRF
with an XRF macro scanner). This work made it possible to verify earlier speculations
concerning the state of preservation and at the same time the history of the stained
glass works, which had probably decorated a window in the church dedicated to this
martyr in Helmstedt around 1200 and had been removed from it probably in 1818.
These are one of the few examples of Lower Saxon stained glass painting from around
1200, and at the same time the circle of emerging alternative Gothic. As such they
should become part of a discussion on the broader problem of artistic activity in the
circle of Henry the Lion and, in particular, the relations between Lower Saxon art and
the English art of the time. The article summarises the results of research carried out
in 2016.
