The subject of the frontispiece is " Stockley Beck,"
in Cumberland, which, in combination with a portion
of the mountainous district amid which it is situated,
forms a passage of landscape scenery that in pictorial
interest can scarcely be surpassed. It is only in Wales,
in Scotland, and in the lake districts of England, that
such combinations are met with. This, and other similar
sketches are introduced here, only to afford to the student
examples of this class of scenery, and to illustrate the
selection and treatment of a sketch.
