The unusual manuscript described in these unedited notes by Dr. Rosy Schilling
was displayed in the main foyer of the Margaret I. King Library in March 1958 along
with several other manuscripts and early printed books from the collection of Col.
David M. McKell of Chillicothe, Ohio. A microfilm negative is available in the
University of Kentucky Library.

Astronomical Medical Calendar

German, studio of Diebolt Lauber at Hagenau.
15th Century c. 1430-50.

On vellum. 12 leaves , 7 7/8:6 ins. Written on two columns in a firm Gothic
hand. Decorated in water-colours and with gold, the Calendar with the Occupations
of the Months in rounds and Signs of the Zodiac, the prognostications with figures
of the Astronomer, Sun and Moon, each within a Gothic arch on top of the script
columns and with a Star below, all painted gold. Vellum binding, with a crown in gold.

with his fingers.

fol. 2v February: A man seated by an open fire, warming hands and feet. - Fish,
fol. 3 February: The Astronomer, bearded, with turban, pointing to the sun.
fol. 3v March: The Astronomer, bearded, with hat, pointing.

fol. 4 March: A man pruning vines. - The Ram licking for the leaves of a tree.
fol.4v April: A maiden seated on the grass, flowers in hand. - The Ox,
fol. 5 April: The Astronomer, standing bare-headed, pointing.

fol. 5v May: The Astronomer, seated at a desk with open book. A scroll incribed: Es wert

ein Zeichen geschehen.
fol. 6 May: A young hunter on horseback, falcon in hand. - The twins, naked, the male

holding a harp.
