We had another brisk gale from the west-south-
west on the 16th, but not so violent as the first;
and on the 17th we descried Ustica, one of the
little islands dependant on Sicily. It is only four
leagues round, and has the appearance of culti-
vation. It was the place of resort for the pirates
and corsairs who infested those seas; about four
years ago, however, the king of Naples deter-
mined to build a f it to keep them off. We had
likewise before us the lofty shore of Cape Saint-
Vitto, in Sicily, and, at ten o'clock in the even-
ing, came to an anchor off the mouth of the har-
bour of Palermo.
