THE UNPUBLISHED COINS OF ELIS.

To Mr. Combe, and Mr, Payne Knight, I must express my obligations
for so important an addition to my work as the unpublished coins of Elis;
an addition, valuable not only from the beauty of the coins, and from
■their connexion with Elis, but also on account of the Museums to which
they belong. Littie as I am conversant with the subject, I shall not
attempt a description of these coins, as any observations I could make
would be such as the mere inspection of this plate would naturally
suggest to the minds of my readers: I shall, however, beg leave to call
their attention to the different manner in which the same subject is not
(infrequently represented in the different coins, by which means a pleasing
variety was produced in the effect, and a greater scope given for the
display of talent in the execution. I must also point out a circumstance of
no little interest when considered with reference to this work, that on one
of these coins may be perceived the name of Olympia.
