The first demos on the sacred road was called Skiron ; it was si-
tuate on a torrent, probably that which rises in Anchesmus ;
and joins the Cephissus ; there are now no remains of it; per-
haps the same with 'S,xa.^a.^avya,e. " V. Paus. Att. C. XXXVI."

It is curious, that Sphettos should have the same relation to

d Scambonidse is supposed to be at the village of Stephani near
the Rheti, to the west of the Dema, which is at a low ridge, with
passes, between Mount Icarius and Mount Parnes, and dividing
the plain of Eleusis from that of Athens. The pass of Dema was
defended by a strong wall, the remains of which still exist, ex-
tending about two miles in a northern direction, which is supposed
to have been raised during the Peloponnesian war, to protect the
plain of Attica in that direction. The word Dema is said to mean
