of the interest taken in the
matter by M. Horta; he
it was who studied the plan
of the section and arranged
the colouring, besides con-
tributing his co-operation.

An interesting departure
yfik was made at the South-

western Polytechnic, Chel-
f ' sea, in the session 1901-2,

by the introduction of a
course of lectures on " The
History of Architecture,"
given by Mr. Banister
Fletcher. The success of
the experiment has induced
the authorities to arrange
another series, which will
commence on Monday,
Tan. 19th, when the subject
dealt with will be "Gothic

colouring. But particularly worthy of
notice was the embroidery on two large
panels by Mme. de Rudder, from designs
by her husband. These large composi-
tions, Spring and Summer, in a style
suggestive of Botticelli, were in exquisite
taste as to colour, and the needlewoman's
skill was simply astonishing; she had
achieved what had always been thought
possible only to the Japanese. M. and
Mme. Rudder have not wasted the ten
years devoted to this wonderful work.

M. Wolfers's show was in two divisions,
silversmith's work and jewelry; the second
far superior to the first. Among the orna-
ments—some reminding us of Lalique's
work, but more massive, and some German
in character—a few were quite admirable.

There were also some fine stands de-
signed by Sneyers, and a handsome
pentagonal case by Hankar.

The last room contained the work of
pupils in the industrial schools, and it
was satisfactory to see that the modern
style has found its way into their training,
with very good results. Though we had
to lament the absence of M. Van de
Velde, fully occupied in Germany, we had,
on the whole, a fairly representative show
of Belgian Art. This was partly the result an artist's studio
