The late J. JV. Water house, R.A.

STUDY IN CHALK BY J. W. WATERHOUSE, R.A.

The illustrations given
here of Mr. Waterhouse's
work have been chosen
from the productions of
his later years, and show
the full development and
maturity of his powers. Of
his earlier paintings many
examples have appeared
in The Studio from time
to time, and in previous
articles the details of his
career have been fully
dealt with, so that they
do not need to be repeated
now. He passed through
various phases in his art,
but he aimed always at
the expression of the poetic
sentiment which guided
the whole trend of his
thought, and, therefore, it
is in these later works that
the fulfilment of his purpose
as an artist can be seen to
the best advantage.
