WAR MEMORIALS

THE return of peace brings with it
the duty of rendering homage to the
memory of the countless thousands who
have fought and fallen in the great conflict,
and that the nation at large is fully con-
scious of its obligation is amply proved by
the multitude of schemes now under dis-
cussion by committees representing com-
munities large and small in all parts of the
kingdom. It is, however, a matter of far-
reaching importance that all schemes of
commemoration which are intended to take a
monumental form should be entirely worthy
of the great occasion, and that none should
be approved without due consideration of
its suitability for the special purpose in
view and its merits as a work of art. Memo-
rials by their very nature are destined to
endure for generations, and haste in the
selection of designs is to be deprecated, a
We have during the past two or three
years illustrated various memorials that
have been carried out already, but these

have, in all cases we think, been of a private
or personal nature. We propose now and
in the future to refer to, and wherever pos-
sible to illustrate, schemes of various kinds
that come under our notice, so that those
interested may see what is being done. 0
Our first illustrations on this occasion
relate to a novel mode of construction in-
vented (and provisionally patented) by an
architect, Mr. Maurice S. R. Adams,
A.R.I.B.A., the description of which is
best given in his own words. Mr. Adams
claims to have evolved “ what architects
for centuries have failed to produce—an
entirely new and pure style of architecture.
Pure, because it conforms to all the essen-
tial principles of architecture ; new, be-
cause only modern reinforced concrete
construction has made it possible. More-
over, buildings have never previously been
erected whose internal and external forms
are identical in so marked a degree. Thus
semi-elliptical concrete vaults, of uniform.
