painter's portrait of himself lent by the
Fine Art Museum, Valencia, and said
to be the most poetical of the portraits
which Velazquez painted of himself.
Among his other paintings The Cook (Mr.
Otto Beit's collection), an early work,
painted when he was a youth of nineteen,
is of great interest as a study of still life.
There does not appear to be any reference
to this particular work in Beruete's
treatise published in English in 1906,
but it is evidently one of several paintings

while Velizquez was studying under his
future father-in-law, Francisco Pacheco,
