STUDIO-TALK.

{From our own Correspondents.)

LONDON.—During the past twelve
months two new art societies have come
into being—the Society of Graphic Art
and the New Society of Artists, both of
which held their inaugural exhibitions
at the Suffolk Street Galleries last season
—and now, we understand, there is a
movement on foot to form a Society of
Marine Painters, bringing together all
artists who as painters or draughtsmen
are occupied wholly or largely with marine
motives of one or other kind. If the
present time seems scarcely propitious

for making another addition to the
numerous organisations already existing,
there is still a good deal to be said for a
society on the lines contemplated. Though
there are not a few artists whose versatility
enables them to handle land and sea
subjects with equal efficiency, yet marine
painting has come to be recognised as a
more or less specialised branch of practice,
and it is one,moreover,which hasflourished
in Britain more than anywhere else.
We have three societies of portrait painters,
anditcan hardlybe contended that a society
of marine painters would not have an
equally valid raison d'etre. 000
