The Etched Work of W. Lee-Hankey,
R.E. By Martin Hardie. (London : L.
H. Lefevre 8c Son.)—The publication of an
imposing catalogue, such as this, of the
etchings of an artist who is still living, and
whose age and energy justify the hope that
he may yet have before him many years of
artistic activity, may surprise those who
are not well acquainted with his work. But
an examination of this volume, embracing
a review of the plates (close upon two
hundred) by Mr. Lee-Hankey which have
appeared between the years 1904 and 1920,
will merit the opinion that such an output
calls for serious consideration. A brief in-
troduction by Mr. Martin Hardie and a
note on the " textile ground," which the
artist employs in so many of his plates, are
followed by excellent reproductions of
every plate etched during the seventeen
years, with a detailed description of each,
and particulars as to dimensions, signature,
number of published edition, trial proofs
and states. 00000

Samplers and Stitches : A Handbook
of the Embroiderer's Art. By Mrs.
Archibald Christie. (London:
B. T. Batsford.) The eminently practical
character of this handbook with its ex-
cellent reproductions of a large number
of interesting samplers and its clearly
drawn diagrams of almost every con-
ceivable kind of stitch will ensure for it
an enthusiastic welcome from needle-
workers. Though one of its objects is to
place on record the traditional receipts for
the stitches and methods of work which
used to be handed down from mother to
daughter but are now fast passing away,
the author's principal aim has been to
make the volume a text-book not of
ancient but of modern embroidery and
design, and thus the illustration of
ancient examples forms but a small part
of it. The technical descriptions accom-
panying the plates and diagrams are clear
and concise, and many useful hints on
the subject of design are given. 0 0

Messrs. F. Warne & Co. are publishing
a volume of Kate Greenaway Pictures con-
taining reproductions in colour of a

300

number of water-colour drawings presented
by the artist to John Ruskin and other per-
sonal friends, and all hitherto unpublished
with one exception it is believed. Ruskin
in one of his lectures at Oxford, quoted by
Mr. H. M. Cundall in an appreciation
written by him for this volume, spoke of
Kate Greenaway's drawings as being
" blissful just in the degree that they are
natural" ; and at the present day interest
in them, though not so keen as it was, is
by no means exhausted. 00a

To the numerous reprints of Fitz-
gerald's celebrated version of the Rubdiydt
of Omar Khayyam an addition comes from
Mr. Leopold Hill of Langham Place, the
text being accompanied by twelve full
page illustrations in colour by Doris M.
Palmer, who in the variety and brilliance
of her tints goes beyond any other illustra-
tor of Omar that we remember. 0 0

Some delightful illustrations in colour
and line by Mr. Charles Folkard accom-
pany the words and music in a volume of
Songs from "Alice in Wonderland" and
" Through the Looking Glass," published
by Messrs. A. and C. Black. The artist has
entered thoroughly into the fun of these
favourites here presented in a metrical
version which will be no less popular. 0

Last year Messrs. Harrap & Co. pub-
lished illustrated editions of The Three
Musketeers and Lorna Doone, and this
season they follow these up with similar
editions of David Copperfield and Jane
Eyre, illustrated in colour by Gertrude
Hammond, R.I., and Monro Orr respec-
tively. 000000

As in previous years, the Christmas Cards
and Calendars published by the Medici
Society this season are made attractive by
excellent colour reproductions of pictures by
well-known artists, living or deceased—

among the older masters, and Mr. Russell
Flint, Mr. Anning Bell, and the late
Reginald Barratt among the more modern.

Wehave receivedfrom Messrs. Gutekunst
and Klipstein of Berne, a catalogue of " Alte
and Moderne Original Graphik," comprising
a large selection of woodcuts, engravings,
etchings, and other prints by the greater
and minor masters of the past and present,
