LONDON.—Following the election of
two painters, Mr. George Lambert
and Mrs. Swynnerton as Associates of the
Royal Academy, a sculptor and an archi-
tect were elected to fill other vacancies in
the same category at a general assembly
held on November 30th—Mr. Alfred
Turner and Mr. Herbert Baker. The for-
mer was assistant to the late Mr. Harry
Bates, A.R.A., and won distinction in the
Royal Academy Schools. Mr. Baker also
studied there before he went to South
Africa in 1892. He has designed many

important buildings in the Dominion, in-
cluding cathedrals at Cape Town, Pretoria
and Salisbury, and at the present time is
with Sir E. L. Lutyens acting as architect
for the new Delhi, 0 0 0 0

Cowper, A.R.A., reproduced opposite is an
early example of that artist's accomplished
draughtsmanship—it was, we believe, exe-
cuted when he was a student at the R.A.
Schools—and though destined to appear
in the now defunct Idler has not, we think,
been published before. 000
