WILLIAM BURRELL, a a

IN April of last year The Studio, in an
article by the present writer, dealt with
the unique group of pictures by the late
Joseph Crawhall, which forms part of the
collection of Mr. William Burrell, then,
and still, on loan to the National Gallery
of Scotland. In this and a subsequent
paper he proposes to deal with the re-
mainder of the collection which makes
such a valuable and interesting contribu-
tion, temporary though it be, to the
attractions of the Scottish Gallery. a

For many years Mr. Burrell has been
noted as one of our foremost lovers and
collectors of art. Not pictures alone, but
bronzes, armour, tapestries and furniture
have been the objects of his pursuit and ac-
quisition. These articles, however, will be
restricted to a necessarily summary account
of the pictures at present in Edinburgh,
with only an occasional reference to some
which the owner has retained in his country
