The engine room occupies the ground
floor, while the battery storage chamber
over is reached by an outside flight of
stone stairs. The materials for the work,
other than stone, had all to be brought
oversea, and this necessitated the con-
struction of a temporary jetty and derricks
in a naturally formed cove, and light
railways from the sea and the quarry up
to the house. 00000
Referring again to the article on
“ Modern Houses in Chelsea,” published
in our issue of last October, with illustra-
tions after drawings by Mr. E. Hesketh
Hubbard, R.O.I., we have now to add to
the names of the architects given last
month (Messrs. Williams & Cox and Mr.
Stanley Barrett) that of Mr. Ralph Knott,
the architect of the new London County
Hall, who designed the doorway in Mallord
Street, shown in one of Mr. Hubbard’s
drawings. At the time the article was pub-
lished we were without information as to
the architects concerned in this very inter-
esting building scheme. 000

LONDON.—To the illustrations given
in our last two numbers from the recent
exhibition of decorative art at the Royal
Academy we now add a few others, be-
longing to the arts and crafts section.
One of the examples of embroidery repro-
duced in our last number (Mrs. Christie’s
little panel) was described there and in the
catalogue as executed by Miss Ohlsson,
but we have since learned that Miss Doris
Moxon executed it. 0 0 0 0

In the course of the past few weeks the
Royal Academy has lost two of its most
popular painter-members—Mr. Benjamin
Williams Leader and Sir J. J. Shannon.
In the case of Mr. Leader, who died at
his country retreat at Shere, in Surrey,
on March 22nd, at the advanced age of 92,
it may with truth be said that no landscape
painter of our day has enjoyed greater
popularity with the crowds that visit the
annual summer exhibitions of the Academy,
