WILLIAM WALCOT'S ETCHINGS

"NUDE STUDY.” OIL PAINTING
BY PHILIP CONNARD, A.R.A.

WILLIAM WALCOT'S ETCHINGS
OF THE OLD AND NEW WORLDS*
BY MALCOLM C. SALAMAN *

DMIRERS of the art of Mr. William
Walcot must always be prepared for
it to break out in a fresh place and offer
some new revelation of an imaginative
vision that conceives, in pictorial terms,
architecture as building in its functional
relation to a living people. With gay
palette Walcot will call from the vasty
past to visual life on canvas some vanished
Pagan Temple that was once a world's
wonder; while his vivid sketch in im-
pulsive fluent strokes of water-colour will

bring as persuasively to pictorial life the
actual Oxford college or the Florentine
palace in its modern aspect. So, on the
copper-plate of imposing size, his con-
structive imagination will guide his etching
needle to show us how the Caesars built
and the people lived “ when Roscius was
an actor in Rome," just as readily as on
the small plate his seeing eye, with delicate
adjustment of scale, will command his
dry-point's dainty line to record wonderful
impressions of New York's architectural
actualities when Sir Harry Lauder's posters
are proportionate to the mammoth struc-
tures of steel and stone. a a a
