the breadth of his ideas and his careful
handling of detail. 0000
Unfortunately they do not convey his
very charming colour effects. The flagged
walk in a paved garden, which appears on
page 194, shows the effect which can be
obtained by carefully thought out com-
binations of plants and masonry. The way
in which the hard, definite lines of the
latter are softened by the introduction of
properly balanced planting should be
noted. 000000
On the same page is an illustration
showing a bold treatment of a stairway
leading from the house to a series of formal
gardens. It is primarily a connecting link
rather than a part of the garden itself, but
forms a very attractive feature in conjunc-
tion with the free planting of Berberis and
other shrubs which soften the outlines of
the masonry and help to complete a
pleasing composition. 000
On page 193 is a view of a paved garden,
one of a series of small country gardens
grouped together and surrounded by lawns
and trees. This is a pleasant instance of
effective contrast between formal details
and informal surroundings of trees and
flower bordered glades. The walls of the
rotunda and terrace are at a convenient
height for sitting and afford attractive
resting places from which to view the
scenery. 00000

Mr. Cane is on friendly terms with the
materials of his craft, whether they be
blocks of stone or the dainty little alpines
that grow among them, and makes skilful
use of contrasting foliage and habits of
growth. This must be a delightful corner
in May. His schemes are very thoroughly
thought out and have a variety of in-
terest which makes them altogether fas-
cinating. 00000

We reproduce in colour a charming and
sensitive sketch by Mr. Vokes of a portion
of this interesting garden. A painting,
distinguished in technique, which conveys
the subtler elements of beauty in a garden
landscape, with a sensitive appreciation of
colour values and a knowledge of what to
suppress is a relief after the laboured
representations of herbaceous borders and
Dorothy Perkins roses which are thrust
upon us in such abundance. 0 0

THE SCULPTURE OF KATHARINE
MALTWOOD. BY VIVIAN US-
BORNE. 00000

Katharine maltwood fills a

unique place among British sculptors,
and it is not too much to say that her work
holds a deep meaning for all who feel art
to be a serious factor in life. During a
period when much of our national sculp-
ture has seemed lacking in inspiration and
originality, this true artist seems to have
gone from strength to strength, and has
given us a series of works of a wonderful
freshness and breadth marking clearly by
their individual characteristics the pro-
gress of a seeking mind towards unattain-
able perfection. 0000
If one were to attempt to sum up in a
few words the characteristics of her work,
one would mention first the intense desire
to realise and interpret the phenomenon
of life, and in recent years this has un-
mistakably led her into paths of mysticism
where that which she shows forth cannot
be comprehended until the mind of the
beholder has tuned itself to her exalted
mood. The sacred things of the Christian
