A DANISH SCULPTOR. BY GEORG
BROCHNER. 0000

OF recent years sculpture has been
greatly to the fore in the Danish realm
of art; quite in harmony with the eternal
fitness of things in the land of Thorvald-
sen. It is not, however, his spirit that
inspires the Danish sculptors of to-day.
They, or most of them, have received
modern impulses with an open and respon-
sive mind, each according to his artistic
temperament and individuality, and the
outcome is work of outstanding and dis-
tinct, in some cases of eminent, merit. 0
Holger Wederkinch is one of the
moderns, and there is all the more occa-
sion to draw attention to his work at the
present moment, inasmuch as he has three
exhibits at this year’s Royal Academy at
Burlington House, exhibits which possess
most of the characteristics peculiar to his
more recent work. Besides being a regular

exhibitor at the Danish Royal Academy, he
also shows at the Salon d’Automne in Paris.
His work has been kindly brought to our
notice by Mr. Croal Thomson. 0 0

M. Wederkinch has by degrees evolved
a pronounced personal style, and although
the motif often may appear somewhat com-
plex, the rhythm of contour never seems
to suffer. But then he admits that the
linear drawing, what the actual mould
conveys, is to him the essence, the chief
aim of sculpture. The subject itself, the
animals he creates, he looks upon as
subordinate, though indispensable, means
of achieving the end he has in view. Our
illustrations show in what good place
