PARIS—MIDDELBURG

of Henri de Regnier, which will appear
shortly. a a a a a

He is at last reaching the stage which is
the logical outcome of his temperament—
the execution of large mural decorations,
to which he hopes henceforward to give his
best energies. M. Valotaire.

MIDDELBURG (Holland). — At
Middelburg, in Walcheren, Holland,
a beautiful sixteenth-century house has
been restored, within and outside, as far as
possible to what was its original condition.
Its owner, Mijnheer Peppelman van
Kampen, has furnished and decorated
it either with original pieces or fine
reproductions to resemble the interiors
painted by the Dutch masters, 0 a
On the ground floor there are two rooms
connected by a doorway, and a delightful
window ; above there is a bedroom, and

a large studio, or workroom. The lower
rooms are exquisitely satisfying in their
silvery-green harmony as the sun pours
through the greenish glass, so typical
of Dutch windows. 000

The house is lived in, giving the whole
that personal touch so lacking in museums.

On the facade there is a series of bas-
reliefs, showing the process of stone-
cutting and carving. The effect is beauti-
ful and dignified, combined, as it is, with
the characteristic pointed shutters. 0

Among the treasures is a brass candle-
stick, which seems to be the model used
by Van Eyck in a painting to be seen
in reproduction in the house; all the
arrangements are based on some old
master. 000000

Our colour-plate opposite is from a
delightful water-colour drawing made in the
house by Miss Marjory Whittington. 0
