COTTAGE INTERIORS AND DECORATION
seemliness of the whole. All kinds
of fireplaces offer endless oppor-
tunities for decoration. Bricks and
tiles, stone and wood, together with
other materials, are available for the
enrichment of these features. One,
exemplified on page 11, is taken
from a living-room. The lower
part is built with hand-made tiles
and bricks, and the chimney-breast
small fitted cupboard is adorned with painted Dutch tiles.
The three remaining drawings of fireplaces (pp. 12 and 14) illustrate the
simple use of bricks and tiles that is especially suitable for small rooms
and bedchambers.
The uses of fitted woodwork are many. Cupboards, drawers, and simi-
lar fittings can, with great advantage,
be designed for every house. If they
are included in the building contract
they will cost less than movable furni-
ture, which rarely fits its place. Among
the wooden fittings here illustrated are
two cupboards and a wardrobe. The
cupboards on this page demonstrate
how small recesses may be used with
advantage; thewardrobe (p. I5),witha
shelf, hanging space, and trays, is a con-
venient piece of bedroom furniture.
Fitted dressers, amply supplied with
shelves and cupboards, are always to be
desired. An example is shown in detail
by the drawing on page 17, and another
dresser appears in the view of the
living-room interior (p. 9). The lower
spaces of bedroom bays and dormers
can be utilized in the manner suggested
by the accompanying illustration (p. 15).
A shelf, fixed at a suitable height,
will serve the purpose of a dressing-
table, the opening beneath being fitted
with drawers. The treatment of the
staircase must not be overlooked. The
woodwork should be free from com-
plication, with the newels, balusters, and
handrails distinguished by simplicity
