largely neglected in the past, partly, no doubt, on account of the prejudice
among tenants against spending money on any furnishings which cannot
be taken away if a move is made elsewhere. This objection disappears
when the tenant is also the owner, and undoubtedly much economy can
be effected when the possibilities in this direction are fully turned to ac-
count. This applies to houses already in existence as well as to those
which have still to be built; but it is to be hoped that architects will in
future give this subject more consideration when preparing plans. Their
