In fittings of this description, and, indeed, with all fittings throughout
the house, good proportion and good detail are essential. They should be
properly designed and not left to the tender mercies of the joiner to handle
in accordance with the venerable traditions of his craft. It is also desir-
able, as a rule, for such features to be neutral in character, so that whatever
furniture may be installed there will be no clashing of interest. This
applies also to the treatment of fireplaces, to which further reference will
be made later.
Referring again to the plan on page 9, it will be seen that two recesses
are formed in the sitting-room which could be turned to account in vari-
