closed with glazed doors, forming cupboards for books or china. As an
alternative, low cupboards might be fitted with open shelves above. In the
two bedrooms shown the value of such recesses is even more marked, as
they are readily made into wardrobes providing much more ample ac-
commodation than any loose wardrobe that could reasonably be introduced
into such small rooms (page 20). Here, again, the accommodation would
be obtained at a much lower cost than in a separate piece of furniture.
These suggestions by no means exhaust the possibilities of such fittings.
They serve, however, as an illustration of what might be done in this di-
rection with economical advantage. Apart from the utilitarian side, there
is no doubt that a house so treated, if capably designed, would possess more
