afford them. A simple chest, such as the one shown on page i 8, has far
more character and suitability and, moreover, provides useful accommo-
dation. The top gives opportunity for an effective display of china and
oddments. A small “ gate-leg,” or other type of folding-table, is valuable
in a room of this description, and when not in use can be closed up and put
on one side.
In considering dining-rooms reference has been made to the possibilities
in the way of a simple fitted sideboard. If loose furniture is introduced op-
portunity occurs for the successful evasion of the commonplace. A simple
side-table and a cabinet, such as are illustrated on page 11, would combine
happily in a room together, and would provide invaluable space for storing
requisites for the table, etc., imparting, at the same time, character and in-
dividuality to a scheme.
Chairs present a difficulty as one can only make a selection from among
the patterns available in the shops. Reproductions of old Windsor chairs,
of the type indicated on page 3, are excellent for use in the dining-room as
they are easily handled and far more comfortable than some of the stiff,
more ambitious designs generally favoured. The lines of a good example
are very graceful and satisfactory. Another good style of chair is shown
on page 5. This might have a rush or wood seat, with a loose cushion
which it would be within the capacity of the ladv of the house to provide.
Such cushions would he useful for introducing valuable colour notes, and
incidentals, need not all he covered with the same material. Some form
